Blackout poetry  Found poetry and the fine art of words.

Project Timeline

Project Overview

Students will work together in teams to create a Blackout Poetry display for our school entryway.  The display will call attention to power of our words and the poetry hidden all around us.  Together with their 8th grade critique group, students will plan, create, critique, and exhibit their work.

What will we consider?

  • What does it mean to say words “resonate” or “ring true” for you?

  • How can we connect to a piece of literature by transforming it?

  • How does word choice affect the mood of a piece?

  • How does collaboration and critique push us beyond our current skill levels?

What will we create?

  • We will work in teams of two to create a design, a first draft, and a final draft.

  • We will write thoughtful artist statements that communicate our vision.

  • We will reflect individually on the process and work in pairs to determine project success based on the expectations laid out by the class.

  • As a class we will select pieces for our final display and discuss how we arrived at the final decision.

How will we collaborate?

  • We will come together as a class to develop a definition of success for this project and select final pieces for display.

  • We will co-create a design and balance our workload.

  • We will share our design ideas with a team of  8th grade students.  We will ask for and offer critique.
