Project Overview

Students will participate in the annual Dia De Los Muertos celebration at historic Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside.  We will join in the tradition of creating an altar to honor our ancestors.  Students will frame images of their loved one, create traditional art, and write a thoughtful biography for our display.

What will we consider?

  • How does connecting with our past help us to understand our present and shape our future?

  • How does participating in a cultural event help us to understand our community better?

  • How does using precise language improve our writing so that it can be understood by an audience?

  • How can I improve my work through critique?

What will we create?

  • We will use online editing software to layer text onto photographs of our ancestors.  The image and text will match the character of the person who is being honored.

  • We will write thoughtful, detailed, well critiqued biographies for our ancestors.  Our biographies will be compiled into a binder that our audience can read through at the event.

  • We will use the CATI strategy to help us understand nonfiction readings about Dia De Los Muertos traditions.

  • We will create sugar skulls and other traditional art pieces to add to our altar.

  • We will design and construct a meaningful altar at The Dia De Los Muertos Festival at Mission San Luis Rey.  The altar will be a collection of our framed images, our art, and our biographies.

How will we collaborate?

  • We will share our biographies and ideas in class circles and small groups.

  • We will participate in circles and welcome guest speakers.

  • We will offer and receive critique.

  • We will participate in editing and revision workshops.

  • We will participate in the set up and break down of our display.

  • We will enjoy the festival with our friends and family.

How will we challenge ourselves?

  • Add to our extension website!

  • Create art for All Souls Vista!

  • Support our class as an expert editor!

  • Research other traditions around the world!
