THE LITTLE PRINCE

WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO YOU WANT?

Project Description

Project Overview

What kind of world do you want?  Our words and actions create our world each day.  The Little Prince, a novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, will be our inspiration as we examine character.  Together we will produce and present the story as a play for our Spring Exhibition.

What will we Learn?

  • How does an author reveal information about a character?

  • How can examining character help us understand themes more deeply?

  • What is subtext and how can I use it to communicate to my audience a character's thoughts and motivations.

  • How can annotating text help us to improve our comprehension?

What will we create?

  • An organized project binder with annotated text, theme webs, and reflections on symbolism in the text.

  • A collaborative performance of the one act play.

  • Artist statements that communicate our understanding of the story and connects its message to the worlds we dream of four ourselves.

  • An interactive audience experience that asks guests to answer the question- What kind of world do you want and what are you doing to create that world?

How will we collaborate?

Students will take on a role on or off stage to contribute to the success of our performance.  We will carefully critique each other's work and offer support for revisions and rehearsals.

How will we know if we are successful?

  • We will be able to clearly connect the words and deeds of a character to the themes of the book.

  • We will draw connections between the themes of the book to our visions of a better future.

  • We will present an interactive exhibition experience that shares the story, shares our thinking through our writing and art, and asks our audience to contribute their thoughts about the themes we have presented.

How will we challenge ourselves?

Basic project goals will be assigned with Google Classroom and through our project binders, but you may take the project as far as you like.  Propose a challenge idea to your teachers and run with it!  An example of an excellent challenge would be creating a quick guide for guests who have never read the book or creating a soundtrack for the book.

You can also challenge yourself by taking on a larger role on or off stage.  Putting on a play is a lot of work.  The more you get involved, the more fun you will have.
